M-Braves finish half with extra-inning loss

The Mississippi Braves will have a few days to stew on their latest loss, and a wasted opportunity.

Elliot Soto singled in the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning Sunday to give the Tennessee Smokies a 7-6 win over the M-Braves in the last game of the first half of the Southern League season.

Tennessee scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie it, with the tying runs coming in on a two-out throwing error. That was after the M-Braves had scored five runs in the seventh inning to take the lead.

The squandered lead was emblematic of the M-Braves’ weekend. They had a chance to overtake Mobile for the South Division championship, but lost three of five games to the Smokies and four of their last six in the first half. Mississippi (39-30) will have until Thursday to regroup, as the Southern League takes its all-star break.

The M-Braves open the second half of the season Thursday night at Trustmark Park against the Jackson Generals.
