Senate Bill 2926 — a bill aimed at helping fund a proposed sports complex in Vicksburg — has made it out of committee in the Mississippi Senate.

“The bill made it out of Finance today,” state Sen. W. Briggs Hopson III said Thursday afternoon.

Hopson expects a vote on the bill in the next couple of days.

A similar bill in the House has also made it out of committee and is expected to be voted on Friday.

House Bill 1655 authored by State Rep. Alex Monsour along with Reps. Oscar Denton and Deborah Butler Dixon, would give the City of Vicksburg and Warren County the authority to levy a two percent tax on hotels, motels and restaurants.

“We’ll bring it on the floor tomorrow and get it out of the House,” Monsour said Thursday afternoon. “It’s got a voter referendum on it and as long as we have that we’ll have support from other members, so we shouldn’t have any problem at all with it.”

“When you get to this time of year we want to make sure we got the I’s dotted and the T’s crossed, he said. “I want to make sure that when we get it out there that we won’t have to bring it back.

When I bring this out for Vicksburg I want to make sure the language is correct.”
