Power outage leads to tie for St. Al, Riverside

St. Aloysius rallied to tie Riverside on Friday night, but couldn’t turn out the lights.

A blown circuit breaker took care of that.

The game between the Lady Flashes and Riverside ended in a 3-3 tie after the outfield lights went out in the top of the seventh inning. The teams played to the end of regulation, but with daylight quickly fading and only the infield lights to see by, coaches from both teams agreed to end the game there rather than keep going.

“We had just enough light to get that last inning in,” St. Al assistant coach Howard Park said. “Their coach and I agreed that whatever it ended up at was it. Whether it was a tie or they won, we weren’t going to play the international tiebreaker.”

St. Al scored a pair of unearned runs to tie the game in the top of the sixth inning.

Grace Upshaw led off with a single and advanced to third on an error, then Stephanie Schoonover laid down a bunt. Upshaw kept a rundown going between third and home long enough to draw a bad throw. Both she and Schoonover, who was circling the bases during the rundown, scored to tie it at 3.

Riverside threatened in the fading light of the seventh inning, putting a runner at second with one out. Schoonover induced a ground ball and a foul fly, however. Right fielder Anna Beauchamp handled the latter in the twilight to preserve the tie.

Michelle Howington had two hits for St. Al, and Upshaw scored twice. Schoonover pitched seven innings, allowing five hits and one walk while striking out nine.

Riverside pitcher Mollie Simpson also pitched a complete game. She gave up six hits, walked two and struck out 10.

Carrigan Sorrels went 2-for-4 with two runs scored for the Lady Bulldogs, and Jessica Irion drove in two runs.
