Hogs take series from Ole Miss

Ole Miss starter Will Stokes was perfect into the fourth inning Saturday. He never made it out of the fifth, and the Rebels didn’t get out of Fayetteville with a series win, either.

Arkansas struck for three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take the lead for good, and went on to beat Ole Miss 5-2 in the finale of a three-game series.

“It was a big confidence booster. It was almost a must situation for us today,” Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn said.

Arkansas (14-13, 3-6 Southeastern Conference) got the win with a little bit of well-timed thievery.

With two outs in the fifth inning, Bobby Wernes stole home to tie the game at 2. Joe Serrano ripped an RBI single up the middle on the next pitch to give the Razorbacks a 3-2 lead, and they never trailed again.

Michael Bernal drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth inning and Tyler Spoon hit a solo home run in the eighth to pad the lead.

Stokes retired the first 10 batters he faced before things got away from him in the fifth. He wound up leaving the game after 4 2/3 innings and all three runs the Razorbacks scored in that frame were charged to him.

Austin Knight went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI for Ole Miss (14-14, 4-5), which lost for the fifth time in six games.

Rice 11, Southern Miss 4

Charlie Warren homered during a 10-run first inning as Rice (19-10, 9-2 Conference USA) routed Southern Miss (14-10-1, 3-4) in game two of a weekend series in Houston.

Rice had nine hits in its big opening inning, including Warren’s two-run homer and a two-run single by Ford Stainback. Leon Byrd also had a pair of RBI doubles.

Southern Miss stopped the bleeding after that, but never got back in the game. Taylor Braley was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, Michael Sterling went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, and Chuckie Robinson had two hits.

Ryan Chandler went 3-for-5 for Rice, and John Clay Reeves was 3-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored.

The teams wrap up their series today at 1 p.m.
