CLOSED: A bridge on Dogwood road is closed due to erosion from Monday’s storm which saturated Warren County.

Two county roads damaged by flash flooding from heavy rain Monday remain closed Friday, and could remain closed for at least a month, county officials said.

The roads, Dogwood Road off U.S. 61 South, and Timberlane Drive off Halls Ferry Road at Timberlane Place, were damaged when rushing water eroded and washed out the dirt from under sections of each road during the storm, which dumped more than a foot of rain in some areas of the county.

Emergency Management director John Elfer said rushing water was responsible for damaging the approaches on both sides of the bridge on Dogwood Road that crosses Wright’s Creek.

“The bridge went under water in (the) 2011 (Mississippi River) flood, but didn’t have any damage,” he said. “The moving water from the flooding Monday cut under the bridge approaches and eroded the soil; you can’t drive over it.”

He said residents on the west side of the bridge can use U.S. 61 South as an alternate route, while residents on the east side can use Hankerson Road to get in and out of the area until the bridge is repaired.

On Timerlane Drive at Timberlane Place, county road manager Buddy Poole said, rushing water worked its way around a 48-inch culvert, eroding the soil and removing it from under the road, damaging the road base. Residents will have to use Sweetgum lane as an alternate route.
