The next time Malcolm Butler comes back to Vicksburg, he’ll have a full house waiting to see him.

All 250 applications for the inaugural Malcolm Butler Football Camp have been disbursed, Vicksburg Gator Booster Club president James Daniel said Monday afternoon. Those who have gotten applications have until July 8 to return them to the main office at Vicksburg High School to ensure they have a spot in the camp.

“Now we just want to make sure the people that have not returned them yet, go ahead and return them,” Daniel said. “We want the numbers up and need to know how many kids we’re going to have.”

The camp is for children in grades 1-8 and is free. Butler will be the featured instructor and the Vicksburg High football booster club will manage the camp.

Butler, a former Vicksburg High star, rocketed to stardom with his last-minute interception for the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX in February. The pick sealed New England’s 28-24 win over Seattle and turned the then-rookie cornerback into a household name.

Nearly 10,000 people attended a parade in downtown Vicksburg that was held in Butler’s honor in February.

To keep the camp to a manageable size, attendance is limited to 250 children. To further avoid confusion, Daniel said only 250 applications were printed. They were first made available to the public two weeks ago and the last one was handed out late last week, Daniel said. He wasn’t sure how many completed applications had been returned so far.

After the July 8 deadline, Daniel said it’s possible more applications will be made available if less than 250 have been returned.

“When July 8 comes, if we’re a little short we would probably put another 50 or so out there,” he said. “But it’s time for the people who have them to bring them back, because we want the kids there.”
