Divers, searching the waters near the City Front, have located the body of a man reportedly dragged into the Yazoo Diversion Canal after his truck’s brakes failed.

Shortly after 5 p.m., officials identified the man as 79-year-old Arthur Green Jr., of Vicksburg.

Warren County Sheriff’s Department, Vicksburg Fire Department and Mississippi Department of Wildlife and Fisheries boats were involved in the search for the Green, who a witness said was clinging onto the truck and afraid to let go. A fire department dive team is also participating in the search.

“He was hanging on to the truck for a period of time before the truck went under water,” Vicksburg Police Chief Walter Armstrong said.

Armstrong said a witness reported Green was outside the truck and yelled out that the brakes of the vehicle had failed.

“From all indication he was afraid to let go of the truck and presumably could not swim,” Armstrong said.

Rescue crews, in working with a local tow truck company, were able to pull Green’s truck from the canal.
