Delinquent tax list inaccurate

The number of properties listed as delinquent in Monday’s edition of The Vicksburg Post was inaccurate according to Warren County Tax Collector Antonia Flaggs Jones.

“We have to upload a file and there was a tabulation error that was made on behalf of our office and there were inconsistencies with selecting the correct dates,” Jones said. “We’ve just uploaded a new file and we’re going to run a correct list on Monday and then follow up with the second run Aug. 24.”

There was an approximate two-week time lapse in the files printed and what should have been printed.

“The time-lapse was between July 17 and Monday Aug. 3,” Jones said. “I have some new people that generate the files and some of the questions were not as clear as they should be.”

The tax assessor is required to annually assess properties within the county and to present assessment rolls to the board of supervisors for adoption. Once those rolls are adopted, they are turned over to the tax collector to collect. Taxpayers can begin to pay taxes for the given year in December of that year. There is no interest charged if the taxes are paid by Jan. 31 of the next year. After Jan. 31, a 1 percent charge is added to the taxes per month until the tax sale in August.

The tax collector is required by law to annually advertise and sell property at a tax sale on the last Monday in August for unpaid taxes for the previous year.

“Luckily there’s enough time frame this month with five Mondays in the month there’s enough time legally to submit it,” Jones said.

While trying to correct the listings, the county is also looking to ensure that there was no malfeasance.

“We got some problems and we’re working feverishly to get another delinquent list advertised,” Warren County Board of Supervisors president Bill Lauderdale said. “We think it was human error, but we’re still digging and our IT guy is trying to figure out how to redo all this and get it corrected, so we’re not out of the woods yet.”

“I’m sorry this happened and we are trying to get it fixed as fast as we can,” he said.

As a result of this law, the Warren County tax collector will have a land sale on Aug. 31, 2015, for delinquent taxes for the year 2014.
