Thousands of Vicksburg and surrounding area homes are now in an immediate boil water notice after the city of Vicksburg’s Water Treatment facility on Haining Road lost power.

According to David Lovell, with the Vicksburg Water Department, the plan lost power about 4:40 p.m. Tuesday.

As of 7:30 p.m., power was being restored to the plant and the plant was beginning to come back online.

Haining said there is a boil water notice in effect for the entire city of Vicksburg and the Yokena-Jeff Davis Water District “until further notice.”

An exact figure on the number of customers affected is not known, but the systems affected serve in excess of 10,000 customers.

Officials with the city did not identify what might have caused the power outage at the treatment facility.

A Code Red phone call alert was sent out to residents throughout Vicksburg and some areas outside of Vicksburg. The call told residents of the water plant’s power outage, the need to boil water and that “city crews are working to resolve the problem.”
