Vicksburg removes boil water notice

The city of Vicksburg has lifted the boil water notice for the city issued late Tuesday.

Wayne Muirhead, a supervisor with the Yokena-Jeff Davis Water District, said the district remains under a boil water alert.

While the Yokena-Jeff Davis buys its water from Vicksburg, he said, it must send samples from its system to the Mississippi State Health Department for testing. He said district officials are waiting on the results.

“We pulled 30 water samples for two days each and they all came back clear, so we are out from under the boil water notice,” Vicksburg Public Works Director Garnet Van Norman said. The notice was lifted about noon Friday.

City officials issued the notice Tuesday night for its 10,000 in the city and the Yokena-Jeff Davis Water District as a precaution after a power outage shut down the city’s water treatment plant on Haining Road.

An electrical short in the elevator was the cause of a power outage that shut down the city’s water treatment plant for about three hours Tuesday, Van Norman said, forcing the city to issue the massive boil water notice.

The notice forced public and private school officials and local businesses to purchase bottled water from local stores to cope with the loss of water service.
