Brewer had more than 400 tackles and 56 sacks in his four seasons as a starter, and still holds a number of school records at Millsaps. The NCAA Division III defensive player of the year award is named after Brewer.

Sean Brewer was one of six people selected for the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame’s Class of 2016. He’ll be inducted alongside former Mississippi State football coach Jackie Sherrill; Ole Miss tight end Wesley Walls; Southern Miss football player Willie Heidelburg; Southern Miss women’s basketball coach Kay James; and Alcorn State basketball player Larry Smith.

Sherrill won 180 career games at four stops, including Texas A&M, Mississippi State, Pittsburgh and Washington State. He took the Bulldogs to six bowl games and won the 1998 SEC Western Division title.

Walls was one of the last two-way stars in college football, playing both tight end and defensive end for the Rebels. He also had a 14-year NFL career.

Walls was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2014.

Smith, a Rolling Fork native, is considered one of the greatest basketball players in Alcorn State history. He averaged 18 points and 13 rebounds per game, and went on to play 13 seasons in the NBA. He led the NBA in offensive rebounds in 1985-86.

Before taking a job with Alcorn State’s athletics department, Smith briefly coached the boys and girls basketball teams at St. Aloysius in 2007.

Smith also spent three seasons as Alcorn State’s men’s coach from 2009-12.
