Prentiss pushes Porters Chapel around

Published 1:04 am Saturday, October 3, 2015

By the time Prentiss Christian had run its second offensive play Friday night, it had almost as many yards as Porters Chapel Academy put up in the entire game.

By halftime, PCA had been sacked more times than it made a first down. By the end of the game, it had one more mark in the loss column.

Blake Greenlee threw four touchdown passes, two of them to Josh Daley, and Prentiss Christian spoiled PCA’s homecoming by rolling to a 40-0 victory.

PCA’s record fell to 1-6. It could still make the playoffs by winning its last two district games, next week at home against Wilkinson County Christian and Oct. 23 at home against Amite School Center, but needs to find some traction in a hurry.

“We’re just outmatched. I think their line averaged 280 or 290. They were huge, and they were a good football team,” PCA coach Wayne Lynch said. “I know it’s repetitive and we say it a lot, but right now we just are not strong enough, we’re not big enough. We’re basically playing a sophomore football team.”

PCA never got anything going offensively. It went three-and-out on each of its first four possessions, had a punt blocked that was returned for a touchdown, and allowed six sacks in the first half.

Of PCA’s 12 offensive snaps in the first quarter, only four gained positive yardage. It finished with 60 yards of total offense for the game.

“We couldn’t get the ball out. As soon as I snapped the ball, they were in my face,” PCA quarterback Patrick Minor said.

Prentiss’ first offensive play was a 53-yard touchdown pass from Greenlee to Michael Goddard. It came after Goddard blocked a punt on PCA’s first possession and returned it 5 yards for a score.

Greenlee threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Daley with 5:29 left in the first quarter to make it 21-0, and the rout was on early.

Austin Daughdrill added a 49-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and Greenlee hit Daley for a second 29-yard TD pass with 39 seconds left in the half for a 34-0 lead. Greenlee’s fourth touchdown wen to Eric Powell midway through the third quarter.

Although it struggled to prevent touchdowns, PCA did find some success in stopping the point after touchdowns. Glen Alan Kittrell blocked one PAT and one field goal, and a bad snap nixed another Prentiss PAT attempt.

“That’s just a testament to our will to win,” Lynch said. “When you’re down 30 points and you’re still fighting to get through there and block kicks, that’s what I preach to them. Keep playing like that. Keep giving the effort that you’re giving. Keep fighting no matter what happens, and eventually that will and that fight and that heart is going to take over. And it will. It will in a big way here.”

PCA will host Wilkinson County Christian next Friday at 7:30 p.m.
