Tallulah Academy wins MAIS eight-man championship

JACKSON — The ending of Mason Todd’s high school career was simply perfect — both for himself and his Tallulah Academy teammates.

The senior quarterback completed 12 of 13 passes for 226 yards and three touchdowns, added two more touchdowns and 135 yards on the ground, and led Tallulah to a 34-25 win over Christian Collegiate in the MAIS eight-man championship game at Millsaps College.

It’s the first eight-man championship for Tallulah (12-1), and first state title since winning the MAIS Class A championship in 1992. The Trojans lost to Sharkey-Issaquena Academy in the eight-man final in 2014.

Todd threw touchdown passes to Dakota Cone, Brice Wood and Taylor Antley, and then iced the game with his feet. After the Trojans converted a fourth-and-1 from their own 26-yard line with 3:41 left in the game, Todd ran 64 yards for a touchdown on the next play. A two-point conversion run by Ryan Hodge made it 34-19.

Christian Collegiate (12-1) answered with a 1-yard touchdown run by T.J. Clolinger with 1:11 remaining, but a two-point try was no good to leave it a two-score deficit. An onside kick attempt by CCA went out of bounds, and Tallulah ran out the clock.
