JV basketball report

(B) Trinity 44, Porters Chapel 23 – Tristan Pickering scored nine points, but Porters Chapel lost to Trinity in the championship game of the MAIS District 5-AA junior high tournament. In the semifinals, Jake Arias scored 18 points as PCA beat Wilkinson County Christian 34-33.

(G) Porters Chapel 30, Franklin Academy 19 – Hannah Embry scored nine points, Fayth McDaniel added six, and Porters Chapel Academy beat Franklin Academy to win the MAIS District 5-AA girls junior high tournament championship. PCA won its semifinal against Amite School Center 23-13, as Embry scored eight points and Brittnee Martin scored seven.

(B) Brandon 42, Vicksburg 35 – Xaviar Watts scored 10 of his 14 points in the first half to lead Brandon over Vicksburg in a ninth-grade boys basketball game on Friday. DeAngelo Dixon led Vicksburg with eight points and Justin Kilcrease scored seven. The Gators finished their season with an 8-4 record.

Registration is now open for the 37th annual Run Thru History, a 10K run and 5K race walk in the Vicksburg National Military Park. Vicksburg’s biggest running event will take place March 5 at 8 a.m., with a 1-mile children’s fun run following the other races.

The registration fee is $25 for the run and walk. The Blue/Gray 1-Miler is free. Trophies will be presented to age group and overall winners, and the first 800 participants are guaranteed to receive a race T-shirt.

VGSA registration

Registration for the Vicksburg Girls Softball Association’s 2016 season will continue through Feb. 22. The league is for girls ages 4 through 18, and the registration fee is $60. Team sponsorships are also available for $100 or $200.

Registration forms are available at Hobie’s and Just Duett Sports. Practices begin March 5, and the season begins March 28.

Hinds soccer tryouts

Hinds Community College’s men’s soccer program will hold tryouts Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Tom Shepherd Field on its Raymond campus.

All participants must bring a valid current physical form with them to the workout, as well as cleats, shin guards, water and for those under the age of 18, a legal guardian.
