A child has been airlifted to Jackson for serious upper body injuries sustained from being run over by a vehicle Tuesday night.

At 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, the 1-year-old child was run over by a vehicle in front of her home on Cumberland Road east of Vicksburg off of U.S. 80, Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said.

“We are not releasing the name at this time,” Pace said.

The driver, James O’Neal, is a friend of the family who pulled in front of the home in a 2004 Ford F150 to talk to the family, Pace said. As O’Neal began to drive away from the home the child was hit by his vehicle, Pace said.

“This is being investigated as an accident, and no charges have been filed,” Pace said.

A neighbor drove the child to Merit Health River Region Medical Center in a private vehicle, and O’Neal followed them to the hospital, Pace said. Deputies were called to the hospital after the child arrived, Pace said.

The child was air lifted to Blair E. Batson Children’s Hospital at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.
