Vicksburg coach Robinson improving

Vicksburg High boys’ basketball coach Dellie C. Robinson is stable and alert — and might not be through coaching just yet, his daughter said Friday.

Robinson remains in the intensive care unit at University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, but his daughter Deatra Robinson said his condition has improved greatly since he was taken there last week.

Dellie Robinson fell ill during the first half of Vicksburg’s game at Madison Central on Jan. 10 and was taken to the hospital later that night. It was initially reported that the 63-year-old had had an aneurysm in his heart, but Deatra Robinson said it was another health issue. She did not offer any details.

“It’s regular stuff that happens when people get old. He is fine and stable and resting,” Deatra Robinson said. “Coach Robinson is not about to die. He is not in that condition. He is doing good and in good spirits. He still asks about his team and wants his team to win. He’s talking, he’s eating, and he’s watching basketball on TV.”

It’s uncertain when Dellie Robinson will be moved from the ICU unit to a regular room, or when he’ll be released from the hospital, his daughter said. With only about a month left in the season, it’s also unclear if he’ll coach again this year.

Deatra Robinson said, however, that the idea he will retire after this might be premature.

Robinson has won nearly 700 games in almost 30 years as a coach at Canton High School and Vicksburg. He led Vicksburg to the 2003 Class 5A championship, and appearances in the state championship game in 2011 and 2014. He’s been at VHS since 1992.

The veteran coach has talked about retiring nearly every offseason for a decade, only to return for the next season. With a potentially long recovery ahead of him, it seemed possible that his health issues might finally lead him in that direction.

Deatra Robinson stresed that her father has not mentioned it during his recovery and has not filed any retirement paperwork.

“He’s a man. Being that basketball is his thing, I’m sure he doesn’t want to go out like that,” she said.

Deatra Robinson also wanted to thank all of the well-wishers who have reached out to her and her family about her father.

“I came out of the emergency room and had about 40 text messages asking about him. One thing we can say for the Vicksburg community is they are supportive and caring,” Deatra Robinson said. “We just want to thank the Vicksburg and Canton communities for their support at this time. We really thank them for that.”

Vicksburg, minus Robinson, will host the Red Carpet Basketball Classic on Saturday. The Gators and Missy Gators will play Germantown in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.

The basketball marathon at VHS begins at 11 a.m., when Porters Chapel and Tallulah Academy play each other in a girls-boys doubleheader. Warren Central’s girls will then take on Forest Hill at 2 p.m., and WC’s boys play Jim Hill at 3:30.
