A Warren County man is being held in the Warren County jail accused of shooting a woman in the chest Wednesday afternoon, Sheriff Martin Pace said.

Chase A. Hanes, 21, was being held in the county jail pending an initial appearance in justice court Thursday. The woman, who was not identified, was taken to Merit Health River Region and later transferred to University of Mississippi Medical Center by AirCare helicopter.

According to sheriff’s office reports, deputies received a call about 3 p.m. that a 21-year-old woman was brought to the River Region emergency room with a gunshot wound. Hanes, Pace said, brought her to the hospital.

He said the shooting occurred on Pecan Boulevard in Openwood Plantation. Hanes and the woman had just arrived at her home when the gun went off in the car. Further investigation indicated Hanes had the gun when it went off, and he was taken into custody.

Pace declined to give further details on the case, citing the ongoing investigation.
