A Utica man is accused of killing another man during a fight on Fayette Street early Sunday morning, Vicksburg police Sgt. Johnnie Edwards said.

Rico DeMichael Hay, 31, 6609 Mississippi 27 North, Utica, is accused of shooting Corey Maxie Jr., 22, during the fight in the 1200 block of Fayette Street about midnight Sunday.

“The two were friends and apparently got into a physical altercation and the victim got the better of him, and he pulled a gun and shot him in the head,” Edwards said.

Hay ran from the scene on foot, but was arrested about 5:41 a.m. at his home in Utica. He was being held without bail at the Issaquena County Correctional Facility pending an initial appearance Monday in Vicksburg Municipal Court.

Edwards said officers responding to the call found Maxie in the middle of the street. Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey said Maxie was declared dead at the scene. An autopsy has been ordered.
