A Vicksburg man arrested in August on charges of sexual assault, unlawful restraint and aggravated battery involving an incident at the Walmart in Ottawa, Ill., has been declared mentally unfit to stand trial.

According to a Nov. 29 article in the Ottawa, Ill., Times, a judge ordered Carvis E. Purvis, 29, to be held at a state institution and treated after a psychiatrist examined him and found him unfit to stand trial. If Purvis is later declared fit, the judge said, the trial would resume.

Purvis was arrested Aug. 29 after Ottawa police said he tried to rape a woman in a store bathroom. The woman’s screams drew employees, who stopped the attack. Doubts were later raised about his mental condition.

An article about the arrest in August, said Purvis was helping move a boat from Waukegan, Ill., to Mississippi on the Illinois River.

The boat had been docked in the Ottawa area for several weeks, according to the article.
