“Everything should warm up by Monday and Tuesday brings the threat of perhaps a little bit of wintery precipitation,” said Tony Hurt with the National Weather Service in Jackson. “As of right now, the confidence is still pretty low because some of the indications are it will be pretty light precipitation. It could be light precipitation in the form of snow or some type of wintery mix or there could be no precipitation. It could be too dry.”

Warren County Emergency Management Director John Elfer said he has been coordinating with the city and county since Friday to prepare for the chance of wintery precipitation on Tuesday.

“We’ve been talking to the road department and I’ll call the sheriff and the board and the city and we’ve got kind of a tentative plan depending on what this thing does Tuesday,” Elfer said. “I will probably know more Monday morning.”

Elfer said the road department has supplies on hand in case there are issues with the roads and the Mississippi Department on Transportation is also available to help as needed.

“They do have some slag they can put down,” Elfer said. “We do have some spreaders. We’ve got some equipment in case we’ve got some trees that fall. We’ve got all that kind of thing. Obviously we aren’t set up like they are up north. MDOT and our road department, they’ve got some aggregate and slag that we can put out on overpasses and problem areas.”

Temperatures are expected to drop to 29 Monday night at the onset of the two-day cold snap.

Tuesday’s projected high is 31 degrees and the low that night is expected to be 15.

Wednesday’s high is projected to be 30 degrees and the low that night is forecast at 18.

“The important thing is to stay close to a source of heat,” Elfer said. “If you can stay indoors. If you have to venture outside, try to cover up any exposed skin on your body. Also important is layer of clothing. Try to stay dry if you have to go outside. Don’t go out fresh out of the shower or something like that.”
