City of Vicksburg lends a hand to small town by donating surplus vehicles

Christmas came early for the town of Gunnison, thanks officials with city of Vicksburg who made a donation of surplus vehicles to the tiny Bolivar County town.

North Ward Alderman Michael Mayfield said the donations were the result of a discussion he had with Gunnison Police Chief Joseph Johnson at a Mississippi Municipal League conference in Biloxi. Mayfield told the chief about Vicksburg’s donation program. The city in the past has donated vehicles and equipment to other small towns.

A heavy-duty work truck along with a small truck and two police cars that were still in operable condition were donated.

Johnson and Gunnison Mayor Frances Ward said the donations were welcomed.

“I really, really appreciate the kindness from the city of Vicksburg — Mr. Mayfield and the board (of Mayor and Aldermen) — for helping us to be able to better serve and protect our community” Johnson said.

The Mississippi Delta town has just more than 450 residents and a tax base that doesn’t allow for extras so the donation means a little more to the folks in Gunnison.

Mayfield and Vicksburg officials should be commended for assisting and helping another community who can benefit from such a gift.
