“She (Hughes) will be doing a program by an African American composer that will be interpreted against the backdrop of American history and culture,” executive director of the Southwest Mississippi Center for Culture and Learning and Alcorn State University’s Vicksburg campus Chris Gilmer said.

Hughes performed on the Alcorn campus last year Gilmer said and was well received.

“We had very good feedback from our campus and have read all of her reviews and consider her a premier violinist of her generation,” Gilmer said.

Monday night’s program is entitled “The Legacy Show” and will feature classical music infused with a variety of styles, including spirituals, blues, gospel, hip-hop and jazz.

Poems by writers Langston Hughes and Maya Angelou will introduce each piece performed and visual media will be projected onto a large screen during the program.

Hughes made her debut with the National Symphony Orchestra, and has toured extensively throughout the U.S., Europe, Costa Rica and Bermuda. As a soloist, she has appeared with a number of symphony orchestras, and in 2011, Albany Records released her solo album “Legacy: Violin Music of African-American Composers.”

In addition to performing, Hughes is a teacher and an advocate for music outreach.

Monday’s concert is free and open to the public, but seating is limited.

“We are seeing this as a gift to the community,” Gilmer said.
