Horizon's gaming floor could reopen today
Horizon Casino, closed since Sunday afternoon due to a power surge that disabled its surveillance system, could be back in business this afternoon if the installation of necessary equipment is completed and the Mississippi Gaming Commission gives the green light.
“I’m hopeful that everything will work out for (Thursday) afternoon or evening, but I don’t want to make any promises to the public I can’t keep,” said Horizon General Manager Bob Little.
Equipment weighing more than a ton arrived from Pennsylvania around 10 a.m. Wednesday, and installation was ongoing as of early evening Wednesday. Little said it must be tested after it is installed and given the OK by state agents — set for this morning at the earliest.
The casino’s restaurants and buffet have remained open throughout the closing of the gaming floor, as has the adjoining 117-room hotel. Little said the power surge did not affect any of the slot machines on the gaming floor, but gaming commission regulations prohibit a casino from operating without fully functioning surveillance. The closure is the first of its kind, said John Gorman, branch director of the gaming commission.
