Cha-ching: Horizon gambling up and running again

The slots are spinning once again at Horizon Casino after a four-day closure due to a power surge Sunday afternoon that blew out the power mechanism for the gaming floor surveillance system.
Horizon General Manager Bob Little said the gaming floor opened around 11:30 Thursday. The casino’s two restaurants and buffet remained open while the casino was closed, as did the adjoining 117-room hotel.
A 3,000-pound piece of equipment had to be shipped from Pennsylvania after the surge that shut down the gaming floor around 3:30 Sunday. The equipment arrived Wednesday and was installed by Thursday morning, at which point the Mississippi Gaming Commission tested the system and gave the casino the green light to open. The power surge did not affect any of the slot machines on the gaming floor.
The closing was the first of its kind at a Vicksburg casino. Little would not elaborate on the cost of the equipment or the lost revenue resulting from the closure.
Horizon, which is owned and managed by Tropicana Entertainment, opened as a Harrah’s Casino in November 1993 and is one of five casinos in Vicksburg. Harrah’s sold the property in 2003, which is located at 1310 Mulberry St., at which point it became Horizon Casino.
