Week in Vicksburg
The week of counting blessings featured seasonal weather. Highs most days were in the 60s. Lows covered a far wider range, differing from 24 degrees one night to 59 on another. Very slight rainfall was recorded on two days before a daylong deluge arrived on Friday, the day after Thanksgiving.
The Mississippi River varied little during the week, starting at a reading of 7.8 feet on the Vicksburg gauge and ending at 7.7 feet. The forecast was a for a reading of 6.8 feet today.
Cinema returned to Vicksburg as Wilcox Theatres opened an upgraded and remodeled four-plex at Pemberton Square. The previous tenant had closed in December of 2006, leaving local movie fans with no place to go for nearly two years.
Riverside Construction, hired to build a new dock at the Port of Vicksburg for $3.4 million, filed suit against Warren County seeking to recover contract penalties imposed after the company did not meet a December 2007 deadline for completion of the project.
Porters Chapel’s Eagles were the last local team standing in football playoffs and saw their season end in a 30-7 loss to Glenbook in Minden, La.

Although gasoline prices have fallen sharply in recent weeks, the same is not true for utilities. Entergy has announced a rate reduction, but not for any electricity metered until after Jan. 1. The same amount of natural gas a City of Vicksburg customer bought for $165 in 2007 will cost $197 this year.
Mayor Laurence Leyens said the city will forgo an offer for free traffic control cameras until the technology is shown to result in improved safety. Leyens was initially enthusiastic about the idea, but said public reaction had brought on a “wait and see” approach.
A total of 15 companies bid on a city project to grade and prepare 50 of the 200 acres Vicksburg bought on Fisher Ferry road for ball fields.
River Region Health System said a lack of a satisfactory response means it will no longer accept non-emergency Medicaid patients from Louisiana for hospitalization. River Region says Louisiana pays the Vicksburg facility at a lower rate than it pays Louisiana hospitals for the same services.
Backers of the Steele Bayou Pumping Station were encouraged by correspondence indicating Congress was informed about the Army Corps of Engineers’ plan. In vetoing the latest design, the Environmental Protection Agency had relied on the belief the project was not congressionally authorized, meaning they had jurisdiction.
