TWO ARRESTS MADE IN THEFT OF TRAILER

A car carrier trailer taken from a local business was recovered, and two Warren County men are charged with taking it, Chief of Detective Jay McKenzie said.

Ashley Williams, 25, 201 Berryman Road No. A4, and Christopher Halford, 17, 2501 Culkin Road No. F5, were arrested Wednesday after the trailer was reported missing from River City Honda, McKenzie said.

Both men were in the Warren County Jail this morning on charges of grand larceny.

CADILLAC IS STOLEN; HOUSE IS BURGLARIZED

A house burglary and an auto theft were reported to Vicksburg Police Wednesday, said Beverly Prentiss, public information officer.

A resident in the 1900 block of Washington Street reported at 1:15 p.m. that a color TV, stereo, air conditioner, cordless phone, shoes, clothes and cash, all valued at $1,700, were missing from her house, Prentiss said.

An hour and a half later, a white 1978 Cadillac was reported missing from the 1200 block of South Street, she said.

COUNTY MAN CHARGED WITH SEXUAL BATTERY

A Warren County man was charged with sexual battery after a fight with his girlfriend led to an attack on her with his long fingernails, Sheriff Martin Pace said.

Investigators originally believed a knife was involved in the attack due to the severity of the wounds to her lower abdomen and the amount of blood lost, Pace said.

When the medical report revealed that no weapon was involved and after consultation with District Attorney Gil Martin, Pace said he amended the charge from aggravated assault to sexual battery.

The woman was taken from her home at 4:28 a.m. Sunday to ParkView Regional Medical Center, Lt. Rose Schaifer of the Vicksburg Fire Department said.

She underwent surgery and was later released, a hospital spokesman said.

The woman’s boyfriend, Tommy Hall, 39, was arrested by Warren County Sheriff’s deputies Sunday night at Smoke Break convenience store at Cherry and Clay streets, Pace said. Hall was hiding inside the store near a restroom when he was found by Investigator Billy Joe Heggins, the sheriff said

Hall was released on $10,000 bond.

HIGH SCHOOL CUSTODIAN ACCUSED OF RAPING STUDENT

A South Delta High School custodian has been charged with the statutory rape of a student who is six months pregnant.

Sharkey County Chief Deputy Cardell Hughes said Wednesday that Garrett Miles Jr., 35, 303 Russell Circle, Rolling Fork, was arrested Tuesday night and released on bond.

Hughes said Miles did not deny having a relationship on school property with the girl, who was 15 at the time they are alleged to have had sex. He said the relationship began in June 1999.

Miles was arrested after the girl’s mother reported to the sheriff’s department that her daughter had been raped.

“We arrested him and charged him, but we’ll have to perform some tests on the baby when it’s born,” Hughes said.

The principal of South Delta High School declined to comment on whether Miles remains an employee, and the school’s superintendent was not available for comment Wednesday or this morning.
