18-WHEELER’S DRIVER INJURED NEAR MOUND

The driver of an 18-wheeler was taken to a Vicksburg hospital after his truck veered off Interstate 20 into a grove of trees near Mound Tuesday afternoon.

Sammy Byrd, chief deputy of the Madison Parish Sheriff’s Department, said Carl Dewight Brooks, no age and address available, was taken to ParkView Regional Medical Center in Vicksburg after the wreck that was reported about 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Byrd said the sheriff’s office received the report from a motorist using a cell phone and found where the eastbound 2001 Peterbilt tractor and refrigerated trailer loaded with cantaloupes had veered off I-20 and into a grove of trees near the 182-mile marker. Brooks had to be helped from the cab of the truck.

“We are still investigating why the truck veered off the road,” Byrd said.

A ParkView spokesman said the hospital had no record of Brooks being treated there.
