HELEN HOLMES-MILLS

PORT GIBSON Helen Holmes-Mills died Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2000, at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center.

She was 48.

Mrs. Holmes-Mills was employed with the Mississippi State Employment Service and a member of Rising Sun M.B. Church.

She was preceded in death by her father, Will T. Holmes Sr.

Survivors include a son, Darious Curry of Port Gibson; a daughter, Latrina Green of Port Gibson; her mother, Irene Holmes of Port Gibson; two brothers, Aubrey Holmes of Port Gibson and Charles Holmes of Fayette; and two sisters, Eva Holmes of Port Gibson and Mattie Brown of Milwaukee.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Rising Sun M.B. Church in Port Gibson with the Rev. Larry Clark officiating. Burial will follow at Springhill Baptist Church Cemetery in Port Gibson. Visitation will be from 1 until 7 p.m. Friday at Thompson Funeral Home in Port Gibson and from 10 a.m. until the service Saturday at the church.

LEROY PEACHES JR.

Services for Leroy Peaches Jr. will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Holly Grove M.B. Church on Johnson Street with the Rev. Robert L. Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home.

Mr. Peaches died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, at ParkView Regional Medical Center.

He was 67.

Mr. Peaches retired as a cab driver for Veteran’s Cab Co. He was a member of Holly Grove M.B. Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leroy Peaches Sr. and Lillie Peaches; his wife, Christine Peaches; three brothers, Clifton Peaches, Milton Peaches and Joe Lewis Peaches; a sister, Margaret Peaches; and two grandchildren, Fredrick Freeman and Joiiya Gleese.

Survivors include his stepmother, Helen Peaches of Greenville; five sons, Clifton Woodhouse, Rodrick Gleese, Matthew O’Neal and Justin Wynn, all of Vicksburg, and Leroy Peaches III of Dallas; seven daughters, Patricia Freeman, Tracey Cooksey, Marcey Gleese, Angela Wynn and LaTangie Peaches, all of Vicksburg, Anna Johnson of Jackson and Della Caples of Dallas; eight brothers, John Peaches and Kevin Peaches, both of California, Kenneth Peaches of Germany, Jimmy Peaches of Oklahoma and Charles Peaches, Abraham Peaches, Michael Peaches and Windell Torey, all of Greenville; six sisters, Linda Peaches, Geraldine Peaches, Lisa Peaches, Sandra Peaches, Toni Peaches and Angela Torey Payne, all of Greenville; 18 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

MICHAEL WAYNE VANCE

INVERNESS Michael Wayne Vance died Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, in Indianola as the result of a gunshot wound.

He was 38.

A resident of Inverness, Mr. Vance was a member of Southside Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Carol J. Vance of Inverness; a son, Jonathan Michael Vance of Inverness; a daughter, Keri Marie Vance of Inverness; five brothers, Robert Vance and David Vance, both of Vicksburg, John Vance of Pacific Grove, Calif., James Vance of Rockaway Beach, Mo., and Stanley Vance of Jackson, S.C.; and seven sisters, Peggy Nunnery, Betty Givens and Mary Lowery, all of Vicksburg, Betty Jean Vance of Houston, Texas, Valarie Vance of Pensacola, Fla., Diane Canan of Augusta, La., and Debra Warren of Panama City, Fla.

Stricklin-King Funeral Home in Yazoo City has charge of arrangements.

GERTRUDE LEWIS WALTON

Services for Gertrude Lewis “Mama Gert” Walton will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home with the Rev. Sammie Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Christian Home Cemetery.

Mrs. Walton died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, at her home.

She was 74.

Mrs. Walton was a retired domestic worker. She was a member of Christian Home M.B. Church No. 1, where she was on the Mother Board.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Eddie Cliff Lewis Sr. and Mary Jane Kelly Lewis; her husband, Charles Walton; two brothers, Thomas Lewis and Sammie Lewis; and two sisters, Virginia Havard and Catherine Nickson.

Survivors include two brothers, the Rev. Hardie Lewis Sr. of Vicksburg and Eddie Lewis Jr. of Kansas City, Kan.; a sister, Blanche Johnson of Kansas City; nieces, including her caregiver, Sarah Mace of Vicksburg; nephews; cousins; and other relatives.
