Vicksburg officials criticized Warren County officials Tuesday, saying supervisors are not doing their part in the budget approved Tuesday to fund programs for people in both jurisdictions.

Mayor Robert Walker said Warren County supervisors snubbed the city by taking his request “under advisement” at their board meeting.

In his request for $200,000, Walker cited the juvenile alternative programs at Kings Community Center and the activities at the Vicksburg Senior Center as services used by city and non-city residents alike. Non-city residents pay no city taxes, but city residents pay both city and county taxes.

“I think it’s less than responsible to not step up to the plate and assume less than a fair share for services that are used by everyone,” he said. He noted that he has made the same request in each of the past three years and has been ignored each time.

Richard George, president of the county board, said the supervisors have not had a chance to discuss the mayor’s proposal, since it was received near the end of Tuesday’s meeting.

“It would have been most helpful if the request had come quite a bit earlier,” George said.

The board will review the request and get back to City Hall when a decision is made, he said.

The city budgeted $69,000 this year for the Vicksburg Senior Center and $240,630 for the Kings Center.

“We’ve requested this every year, and every year they have another excuse to give,” said North Ward Alderman Gertrude Young. “Either you want to do it, or you don’t. Just tell us.”
