A Jackson man whose body was found in the bed of his pickup on a rural Claiborne County road Monday died of gunshot wounds to the throat and left temple, an autopsy revealed.

James O. “Bubba” Hill Jr., 47, was shot four times, with one shot to the chest and one to the stomach.

A Utica volunteer firefighter on his way home from a deer camp spotted Hill’s body in the red pickup, which was pulled off into the trees beside Carlisle Road.

Residents reported seeing the truck in the area as early as Saturday, but no one looked close enough to see the body, said Claiborne County Sheriff Frank Davis. The truck, which has a Copiah County license plate, was taken to the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff’s department is investigating leads concerning Hill and a person connected to a deer camp nearby in Hinds County, Davis said. Hill was a member of the camp, the sheriff said.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol is assisting with the investigation.

Claiborne County Coroner James Mallett said it was difficult to tell how long Hill had been dead when his body was found.
