NELLIE MAE ALEXANDER
Nellie Mae Alexander died Monday, Oct. 16, 2000, at Vicksburg Medical Center. She was 59.
Mrs. Alexander was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Thomas Sr.; and a brother, Joseph Thomas Jr.
She is survived by her husband, Benjamin Alexander Sr. of Vicksburg; three sons, Jimmy Alexander, Benjamin Alexander Jr. and Donald Alexander, all of Vicksburg; three daughters, Willie Stene Alexander, Verlene Alexander and Rosie Alexander, all of Vicksburg; her mother, Rosie Thomas of Hayti, Mo.; four sisters, Beatrice Turner of Vicksburg, Verlene Noel and Vatter Thomas, both of Memphis, and Tressie Lee Foster of Columbia, Mo.; two brothers, Roosevelt Thomas of Memphis and Willie Thomas of Hayti; 14 grandchildren, one great-grandchild; nieces, nephews and other relatives, including Mytell Alexander of Vicksburg.
Dillon-Chisley Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.
JOE ELLIS
PORT GIBSON Joe Ellis died Monday, Oct. 16, 2000, at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson. He was 77.
A lifelong resident of Port Gibson, Mr. Ellis graduated from Port Gibson High School and the University of Mississippi. He was in the Army, serving during World War II.
He received clinical training for registry as an American Medical Technologist at Vicksburg Infirmary. He served as lab and X-ray director at Claiborne County Hospital for 33 years before retiring in 1984.
Mr. Ellis was a Mason and member of Washington No. 3 F&AM. He was a charter member of Port Gibson Kiwanis Club. He was a member of other civic clubs and Port Gibson United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Anna Ellis of Port Gibson; a son, Griff Ellis of Clinton; two daughters, Kay E. Sturdivant of Raymond and Jo Ann Mikell of Port Gibson; two sisters, Josephine Mullens of Port Gibson and Camille Burlton of Rockville, Md.; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 3 Wednesday at Glenwood Funeral Home in Port Gibson. Burial will follow at Wintergreen Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Dr. George Thomas, Dr. Ray Bryant, Dr. Eli “Sonny” Ellis, Joseph Ellis, Preston Piazza and John Segrest.
Honorary pallbearers will be Henry Marx, Walter Cade Sr., Ralph Collier and William May.
DAVID L. HILLS
Services for David Luke Hills will be at noon Friday at Travelers Rest M.B. Church with the Rev. Thomas Benard officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the service Friday at the church.
Mr. Hills died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, at his home. He was 38.
He was a member of the usher board of Travelers Rest M.B. Church. He graduated from Vicksburg High School in 1979 and received his certified nursing assistant’s degree from American College School of Nursing. He was a Red Cross instructor.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert B. Hills Sr.; his maternal grandmother, Martha Jointer; and his paternal grandparents, Susie Neal and Joe Hills.
Survivors include a son, Sherman Green of Vicksburg; his mother, Ruby Lee Jointer Hills of Vicksburg; four brothers, Lawrence Jointer of Fort Washington, Md., Robert B. Hills Jr. of Vicksburg, Ruben J. Hills of Upper Marlboro, Md., and Carl Edward Hills of Richmond, Calif.; three sisters, Mary Alice Green of Colton, Calif., Barbara A. Johnson of Jackson and Martha R. Fairley of Raleigh, N.C.; and his maternal grandfather, the Rev. R.J. Jointer of Cary.
