Jim Taylor plans on opening things up offensively a little Friday night in an attempt to send his senior Flashes out with a win and start working toward next year.

The Flashes (3-6, 1-2 Division 6-1A) will host one of the preseason division favorites Pisgah at 7:30 at Farrell Stadium.

This will be the first time in Taylor’s three years at St. Al that neither his Flashes nor Pisgah will have a playoff bid on the line.

On tape, Taylor has a hard time figuring out why Pisgah will also stay home for the postseason.

“They played Puckett to 19-13,” said Taylor, whose team lost to Puckett 32-7 earlier in the year “They move the ball well on offense and play very good defense.”

The Dragons (4-4, 1-2 division) play a 4-4 defensive scheme, Taylor said. They thrive on putting pressure on the quarterback and opponents running games.

“We won’t make many changes this late in the season,” Pisgah coach Richard Hall said. “We have a lot of injuries and it is hard to make changes with personnel problems.”

Hall said his team has dragged through practice this week and he is concerned about his group.

“We had a chance to beat Pelahatchie and came back late against Puckett,” Hall said. “I just don’t know how our kids will react. Coach Taylor does a good job … and we know they’ll be ready.”

Offensively, the Dragons pound the ball on the ground behind Phillip Archie, who has scored 13 touchdowns from the Wing-T offense. Alphonso Lee and fullback Dwight Evans complement Archie in the backfield.

The Flashes will be without Walker Hengst, the team’s second-leading rusher with 321 yards. Hengst underwent surgery Thursday to repair an injured knee.

Eight seniors will be suiting up for their final game for the Flashes.

“We want to play as hard and as best as we can,” Taylor said. “For the seniors, they’re working on the memories and the others are working on next year.

“This is a great group of kids and they really enjoy playing. It’s not a problem getting them ready to play. We’re going after this game like it’s any other.”
