VHS squads, Vikings roll in openers

Michael Thornton got a hat trick, plus one, as Vicksburg High opened its season with an impressive win over Forest Hill.

Thornton, a sophomore forward, booted in four goals and had an assist to lead the Gators to a 7-1 win over the Jackson school, which features three all-staters.

“This team has good chemistry,” VHS coach Josh Harper said.

John Griffing had a goal and an assist and Lane Campbell found the back of the net once for the Gators, who led 3-0 at the half after scoring at the 14-, 16- and 20-minute marks.

Russell Morrison scored the fourth goal four minutes into the second half.

Bobby McComas had five saves for the Gators, who go to Murrah Monday.

(G) VHS 12, Forest Hill 0

Michelle Beatty and Brandi Parker pulled off hat tricks as the Missy Gators romped the first-year program, rolling to an 11-0 lead in the first half.

“We just kind of played keepaway after it got to be 6-0,” VHS coach Kevin Manton. “It gave us a chance to work on some things.”

Courtney Chapman booted in two goals and Kim Griffing scored on a direct kick. Haley Nosser scored on a Parker assist and Taybi Ellis scored on Beatty’s second assist. Megan Kelly got a goal on an assist from Ellis.

(B) WC 3, St. Andrew’s 0

Ricky Pennington had a goal and an assist as Warren Central opened with a shutout. Jake Artman put the Vikings on the board first on Pennington’s assist and Zach Richards took a dish from Stephen Davern for the second goal. Pennington got the final goal on an assist from Michael Smith.

The Vikings outshot the Saints, 25-9. Bradley Downey had six saves for WC.
