Bell said police were called to Myrick’s Delta Street apartment at 1:22 a.m.

He said investigators were told Schaefer’s ex-wife, Marie Schaefer, was at the apartment when Schaefer broke in and began chasing Myrick around the apartment.

Myrick pulled a Ruger .222-caliber rifle and fired at Schaefer, Bell said.

The chief said the case was still under investigation.

Holmes said she is withholding a final ruling on Schaefer’s death pending the results of an autopsy planned in Jackson Monday night.

Glenwood Funeral Home will have charge of services.
