Callaway got two penalty kicks in the final five minutes to beat Vicksburg High, 5-4, Thursday night.

“It’s embarrassing,” VHS coach Josh Harper said of his Gators (2-4), who had a 5-2 lead.

“We shouldn’t have been in position for that to hurt us,” he said of the Chargers’ late goals.

The strong finish by Callaway (1-1) spoiled sophomore forward Jeremy Johnson’s hat trick. Michael Thornton had the Gators’ other goal on an assist from John Griffing. Lane Campbell also had an assist.

On the calls that gave the Chargers the penalty kicks, Harper said, “It looked clean to me, but it’s just a matter of interpretation. We slid to knock the ball out. It looked like, fundamentally, a good move. It’s something we have to deal with.”

Harper said it was possible his players were looking ahead to big games next week.

The Gators play defending Class 4A champion Florence on Tuesday, the archrival Warren Central on Thursday.

“We’re playing well,” he said. “We just don’t have the wins to show it.”

The Missy Gators rolled to 5-1 with a dozen goals, 10 of which were assisted.

Vicksburg will be at Jim Hill Friday.
