Parity in Mississippi girls soccer was never more apparent than this weekend’s Vicksburg Warren Classic.

Four of the five games were decided by one goal three in shootouts and one game ended in a tie.

Vicksburg (8-3) was the lone team to finish winless after falling to Pearl, 2-1, in a shootout Saturday afternoon. It was the third game in as many days for the Missy Gators, who were without four starters.

“We were a little tired, you could tell,” said Vicksburg coach Kevin Manton, who was without Neely Nasif and Leanne Feibelmann at the state cheerleading competition and Kim Griffin and Brandi Parker taking the ACT. “Last night took a lot out of us losing that shootout to Clinton, and then we had to turn around today and play without four starters. Our execution of what we are trying to do is not where it is supposed to be right now.”

Cassie Griffing scored the lone goal for Vicksburg, but suffered a case of deja vu in the shootout. Shooting last, Griffing’s shot was stopped by Drea Nelson to give the Lady Pirates (2-6-1) the victory. On Friday night, Griffing’s shot in the shootout sailed over the goal, giving Clinton the win.

“Experience is a great teacher,” Manton said. “I gave her an opportunity today because she missed last night. She’s usually pretty good and that’s the reason I put her back in there. It just didn’t happen.”

Pearl followed the win immediately with another shootout against Warren Central. The game ended last night in a tie and no shootout was used, but because other teams were using shootouts, WC and Pearl continued their tie game.

Lady Vikes’ goaltender Courtney Hubert made two saves and one shot went wide as the host team took the unusual win. Alisha Lawrence, Megan Carlisle and Kim Hughes all scored for WC (6-5-1) in the shootout.

Kathryn White’s goal off of a direct kick 10 minutes into the second half was all the offense Brandon needed against WC in a 1-0 win.

“We played OK in the first half, but in the second half, it didn’t look like we were in the game,” WC coach Holly Lane said. “We were beating them to the ball early, but we have a habit after we’ve played a while of waiting on the balls. We can’t do that.”

Hubert made seven saves, but the Lady Vikes attempted just seven shots.
