Mother Nature won’t be giving Vicksburg a White Christmas this year, a forecaster with the National Weather Service’s Jackson office said. But it will be cold.

The NWS estimates that weekend low temperatures will dip into the 20s and teens.

“This is seven days in advance we’re talking about, so we can’t be absolutely sure,” forecaster David Biggar said. “But right now it looks like a couple of days with not a lot of precipitation. It’ll be Christmas temperatures, just not snow.”

But Biggar said the area might see the white stuff before the weekend, with no accumulation.

“The best chance is probably Thursday,” he said. “I don’t think we can promise snowed-in, but we’ll probably see some snow.”

Biggar said the snow would probably switch to freezing rain soon after it starts falling.

This morning, a spokesman for the Sharkey County Sheriff’s Department said in spite of the rumor of it always snowing in Rolling Fork, it wasn’t. She said the weather there was cloudy and cold but dry.

Biggar said a cold front will push through Vicksburg at about 4 p.m. today, increasing wind speeds to between 15 and 25 mph. As a result, wind chills are expected to approach zero tonight.

Highs Tuesday are expected to be between 25 and 30 degrees, with a wind chill near zero.

“It will be bitterly cold,” Biggar said. “People need to dress warmly if they plan to be outside.”

The weather is expected to warm to 45 or 50 on Wednesday before dropping again on Thursday.

Over the weekend, Entergy Mississippi said 2,500 to 3,000 customers lost power Saturday. Most of those homes were back hours after the outages were reported.

However, Robert Lesley, a spokesman for Entergy, said one customer remained without power this morning. He said they expected that to be restored by noon.

Across the city and county, high winds were blamed for downed limbs and trees.
