ETHEL K. SANDERS

Services for Ethel K. “Dump” Sanders will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Dillon-Chisley Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Sanders died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at ParkView Regional Medical Center. She was 90.

A lifelong resident of Vicksburg, she retired as a maid from the Vicksburg Warren School District. She was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by a son, Clarence Trevillion, and a daughter, Ethel Louise Sanders.

She is survived by two daughters, Helen G. Sanders of Vicksburg and Wilma Reed of Los Angeles; three grandsons, Raymond Sanders of Florida and Kevin Otis and Brian K. Sanders, both of Vicksburg; and four great-grandchildren.

SAM SCURRIA JR.

TALLULAH Sam Scurria Jr. died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at Olive Branch Senior Care Center in Tallulah. He was 86.

Mr. Scurria was a lifelong resident of Tallulah. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of St. Edward’s Catholic Church.

He is survived by two daughters, Patrina Weems of Delhi and Maria Wall of Monroe; a son, Sam Scurria of St. Louis; a brother, Joseph Scurria of Tallulah; two sisters, Jennie Scurria of Tallulah and Angelina Illardo of Dallas; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A private family service will be at St. Edward’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Ferre D’Cruz officiating.

Memorial may be made to St. Edward’s Catholic Church, P.O. Box 1308, Tallulah, La. 71282.

CALVIN SMITH

Calvin Smith died Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, at his home. He was 72.

Mr. Smith was a member of Fellowship M.B. Church.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Rose Hughes; and a son, Calvin N. Moore.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred Smith of Fayette; four sons, Lucion Smith, Houston Smith, General Thomas and Rufus Thomas, all of Fayette; four daughters, Frances Ross, Joyce Smith and Shirley Smith, all of Fayette, and Leslie Mable of Gary, Ind.; a brother, Jessie Smith of Fayette; a sister, Annie B. Walton of Fayette; 24 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and other relatives including Annie B. Walton and Calvin Robinson, both of Fayette.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Fellowship Baptist Church in Rodney with the Rev. James Bolton officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 1 until 6 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and from noon until the service Friday at the church.

TERRY ABB VANCE

EDWARDS Terry Abb Vance died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, in Dallas. He was 85.

Born in Union, Mr. Vance lived in Edwards for many years before moving to Dallas in 1995. He owned Sinclair Service Station in Edwards from 1945 until 1961. He was a justice court judge in Hinds County for 16 years. In 1946, he was appointed fire chief for the Edwards Volunteer Fire Department, of which he was a member for 38 years. He served as colonel during three Mississippi governors’ terms.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Winnie Murl Vance.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Vance of Dallas; two sons, Phil Vance of Woodlands, Texas, and Terry A. Vance of Fort Wayne, Ind.; a stepdaughter, Patsy Bailey Arthur; a stepson, Derrell Bailey; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Edwards Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Edwards Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until noon Wednesday at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home and from 1 p.m. until the service at the church.
