[01/03/01] Ice left over from a New Year’s Day snow continued to frustrate Vicksburg area motorists Tuesday and Wednesday morning after an overnight low of 18 degrees.

Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said his department handled 11 wrecks on county roads Tuesday. Injuries were reported in two of those crashes, he said.

“All and all, we’re doing well in the county, but there are some icy spots still,” Pace said.

No county roads have been closed, but Pace warned that motorists should still use caution. On many roads, ice remained this morning in shaded spots, he said.

“If you hit a patch of ice, don’t hit the brakes,” Pace said. “Just try to coast through it.”

Lt. David Beard said the Vicksburg Police Department handled two wrecks were reported in the city Tuesday and that overall Vicksburg roads are in good shape.

Roads that remained closed this morning included the hill on Clay Street between Cherry and Monroe, Walnut and Washington and Mulberry and Washington; South Street between Walnut and Washington; John Allen Drive; and a portion of Porters Chapel Road.

Mark McAllister, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Jackson, said temperatures were expected to rise above the freezing mark Wednesday with sunny skies and highs between 35 and 40. The mercury is expected to drop back down to around 20 degrees Wednesday night, McAllister said.

Officially, 1.3 inches of snow fell on the city New Year’s Eve. The next chance of precipitation is expected Sunday with a chance of rain when the high is predicted to reach 50 degrees, McAllister said.
