JAMES CLARENCE BURRIS III

TALLULAH James Clarence “Trip” Burris III died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at his home in Monroe, La. He was 26.

Mr. Burris was born in Florida and had lived in Louisiana most of his life. He was a graduate of Tallulah High School and was a student at the University of Louisiana in Monroe.

He was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his father, James C. Burris Jr.

Survivors include his mother, Dora Taylor Burris of Tallulah; a brother, Brian Keith Burris of Monroe; and his grandmother, Dorothy Burris of Tallulah.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home in Tallulah with the Rev. John Rushing officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Hunter Baker, Lance Morgan, Drew Evans, Alex Evans, Tim Sergeant and Joey Freeman.

Honorary pallbearers will be Lupe Hernandez, Louis Morgan and Nick Williamson.

IRA OGDEN COODY

TALLULAH Ira Ogden Coody died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at Madison Parish Hospital in Tallulah. He was 80.

A native of Texas, Mr. Coody had lived in Tallulah for the past 10 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a farmer. He was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie Lee Harrison Coody; and a son, George L. Coody.

He is survived by three sons, Bill Coody of Monroe, Leon Coody of Pineville, La., and Lyn Coody of Oxford, Ala.; three sisters; Leona Hattaway of Tallulah, Willie Mae Hilderbrand of Vicksburg and Roberta Storm of Illinois; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home with the Rev. John Rushing officiating. Burial will follow at Herringville Church Cemetery in Monticello, La.

Visitation will be Wednesday night at the funeral home.

ROYCE ALVIN DOWE

UTICA Royce Alvin Dowe died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at his home in Utica. He was 67.

Mr. Dowe was a lifelong resident of Hinds County. He was retired from Westinghouse/Cooper Industries and was employed with Capital Security of Jackson. He was a member of Chapel Hills Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Isaac and Carrie Dowe; and a brother, Talmadge Dowe.

He is survived by his wife, Jean J. Dowe of Utica; two daughters, Sheryl Dowe Walker of Learned and Donnie Dowe Tate of Richland; two brothers, Glen Dowe of Jackson and Joe Dowe of Tylertown; five grandchildren, one great-grandchild; nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Glenwood Funeral Home in Utica with the Rev. Ricky Callaway officiating. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 until 8 Wednesday night at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Allen Fisher, Harold Johnson, Bernard Cook, Johnny Breedlove, Joel Smith, Ken Tate, Chris Breedlove and Keith Dowe.

ALICE PEARL SHINGLER

Alice Pearl Shingler died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at her home. She was 69.

A lifelong resident of Vicksburg, Mrs. Shingler was a homemaker and member of Woodlawn Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe Leonard and Alice Pearl Whitten Barrentine, and a brother, Lester Barrentine.

She is survived by two daughters, Peggy Luther of Vicksburg and Teresa Beard of Greenville; four sons, David Shingler of Camden, Ark., Donnie Shingler of Angleton, Texas, Ricky Shingler of Vicksburg and Mike Shingler of Pensacola, Fla.; five sisters, Eleanor Barrentine and Linda McGraw, both of Greenville, Tressie Webb of Leland, Martha Warnock of Vicksburg and Jo Ann Jackson of Conroe, Texas; five brothers, James Barrentine of Philadelphia, Miss., Johnny Barrentine of Vicksburg, Raymond Barrentine of Leland, Terry Barrentine of Magnolia, Texas, and Ronnie Barrentine of Beaumont, Texas; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Fisher-Riles Funeral Home with the Rev. Carl Barnes, the Rev. Eugene Webb and Roger Cresswell officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 Wednesday night at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Eugene Shingler, Shane Shingler, Bryan Baldwin, Ray Shingler, Frankie Terry, Rory Warnock, Johnny Terry and Wesley Barrentine.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Hendrik K. Kuiper, Dr. Joe Ross, Dr. Hildon Sessums, Charley Ervin, Sidney Carpenter and Dr. Steven Zachow.

JOHN H. THOMAS

John H. Thomas died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at his home. He was 50.

Mr. Thomas was a 1967 graduate of Rosa A. Temple High School. He received his bachelor’s degree from Jackson State University in 1971. He received his master’s degree from Mississippi State University and further studied at Mississippi College and Alcorn State University. He had 27 years service as an administrator with Warren County Public Schools, Hinds Community College, Biloxi Public Schools and Hinds County Public Schools, from which he retired. He was a member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church.

He was preceded in death by his father, David E. Thomas Sr., and a sister, Ca’lannye M. Thomas.

He is survived by two sons, Jonathan J. Thomas and Justin D. Thomas, both of Vicksburg; a daughter, Tammy Thomas-Jackson of Memphis; his mother, Caldonia M. Thomas of Vicksburg; a brother, David E. Thomas Jr. of Vicksburg; a sister, Kara E. Thomas Johnson of Chicago; two grandchildren; and other relatives, including Angela Thomas-Stamps of Vicksburg, Brenee Johnson and Julian Johnson, both of Chicago, Brenneth Johnson and David Jackson.
