EDDIE LEE KNIGHT

DELTA CITY Eddie Lee “Boo” Knight died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at Delta Regional Medical Center in Greenville. He was 66.

Mr. Knight is survived by his wife, Mattie Knight of Vicksburg; father, Sie Knight of Chicago; six sons, Shawn Knight and Lewis Knight, both of Chicago, Alfred Knight, Eddie J. Knight and Gerald Knight, all of Vicksburg, and Artis Jones of Houston, Texas; four daughters, Marilyn Butler of Edwards, Sarion Goodman and Tamey Knight, both of Vicksburg, and Gloria Hollins of Rolling Fork; six brothers, Alfred Knight and John Knight, both of Rolling Fork, Richard Knight, Flenard Knight and Jerry Knight, all of Chicago, and Bernard Knight of Delta City; five sisters, Ruby Anderson of California, Saddie B. Knight, Mary Knight, Tina Knight and Brenda Knight, all of Chicago; 27 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Saturday at Mount Ollie M.B. Church in Egremont. Burial will follow at Mount Ollie Cemetery in Egremont under the direction of Walker Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 5 until 6 Friday at the funeral home in Rolling Fork.

ELIZABETH STENNIS MARTIN

Elizabeth Stennis Martin died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at Vicksburg Medical Center. She was 86.

Born in Kemper County, Mrs. Martin was reared in Newton and had been a resident of Vicksburg for the past 62 years. During World War II she was employed with the U.S. government in Oak Ridge, Tenn. A former teacher with Vicksburg city schools, she was also employed with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Vicksburg for several years. She also was a volunteer at Vicksburg Medical Center and was a member of Crawford Street United Methodist Church.

She is survived by two sisters, Doris S. Bearden of Columbus and Mildred Rochelle of Atlanta; a stepson, Burkett Martin of Vicksburg; a stepdaughter, Ann Dewell of New Orleans; nieces, nephews and other relatives, including Thomas Bearden of Vicksburg.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Masonic Cemetery in Newton with the Rev. Geoffrey Joyner officiating.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 Friday night at Glenwood Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Thomas Bearden, Scott Bearden, Dudley Bearden, Guy Martin, Richard Dewell and John Dewell.

BLANCHE S. PENLEY

Blanche S. Penley died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at ParkView Regional Medical Center. She was 86.

Born in Indianapolis, Mrs. Penley had lived in Vicksburg for more than 80 years. She retired from the Vicksburg District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers after 30 years of service.

She was a member of First Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Able Thomas and Ollie Growe Sullivan, and her husband, E.C. Penley.

Survivors include a son, Clarke N. Penley of Pensacola, Fla.; a daughter, Sharon B. Penley of Vicksburg; two sisters, Vesta Carroll and Laura Hanisee, both of Vicksburg; two grandchildren, Andrew Penley of Vicksburg and Cailin Penley of Pensacola; nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Fisher-Riles Funeral Home with the Rev. Stan McDougal officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 Friday night at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be nephews.

CALZONIA WONSEY TAYLOR

Calzonia Wonsey Taylor died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, at Trace Haven Nursing Home. She was 93.

Mrs. Taylor was a homemaker. She was a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church, where she was on the Stewardess Board and a member of the Missionary Society.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Nellie Nervis Wonsey; her husband, William Taylor; and a sister, Ardella Christian.

She is survived by a daughter, Ethel Strickland of Meadville, Pa.; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a niece, Velma Christian Bunch.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Bethel A.M.E. Church with the Rev. John W. Jenkins officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1:30 Saturday until the service at the church.

JOHN H. THOMAS

Services for John H. Thomas will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Center with the Rev. Richard T. Middleton III officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. Saturday until the service at the center.

Mr. Thomas died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at his home. He was 50.

Mr. Thomas was a 1967 graduate of Rosa A. Temple High School. He received his bachelor’s degree from Jackson State University in 1971. He received his master’s degree from Mississippi State University and further studied at Mississippi College and Alcorn State University. He had 27 years’ service as an administrator with Warren County Public Schools, Hinds Community College, Biloxi Public Schools and Hinds County Public Schools, from which he retired. He was a member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church.

He was preceded in death by his father, David E. Thomas Sr., and a sister, Ca’lannye M. Thomas.

He is survived by his wife, Diane M. Thomas of Vicksburg; two sons, Jonathan J. Thomas and Justin D. Thomas, both of Vicksburg; a daughter, Tammy Thomas-Jackson of Memphis; his mother, Caldonia M. Thomas of Vicksburg; a brother, David E. Thomas Jr. of Vicksburg; a sister, Kara E. Thomas Johnson of Chicago; two grandchildren, David Nicholas Jackson and Morgan Diane Jackson, both of Memphis; and other relatives including David Jackson of Memphis, Brenneth Johnson, Brenee Johnson and Julian Johnson, all of Chicago, and Angela Thomas-Stamps of Vicksburg.
