DOROTHY HANES LAUGHLIN

ARLINGTON, VA. Dorothy Hanes Laughlin died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, in Arlington, Va. She was 95.

Born in Vicksburg, Mrs. Laughlin was the daughter of the late William Frederick and Mary Curtis Hanes. She was educated in the Warren County school system. She was a member of the Public Affairs Office of Waterways Experiment Station. She retired as an editor from the Army Publication Department in Columbus, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jeff D. Laughlin.

She is survived by a daughter, Dorothy H. Laughlin II of Arlington, Va.; a sister, Mary Dee Hanes Hunter of Dallas; a brother, Francis P. Hanes of Vicksburg; and other relatives.

Burial was Thursday at National Memorial Park Cemetery in Falls Church, Va., under the direction of Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home of Alexandria, Va.

BONNIE B. MOORE

PORT GIBSON Bonnie B. Moore died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at her home at Lake Claiborne. She was 88.

Mrs. Moore was a lifelong resident of Claiborne County. She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Earl Moore.

She is survived by two sons, Earl Moore and Bill Moore, both of Port Gibson; a sister, Jessie Wilkerson of Monticello; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Glenwood Funeral Home in Port Gibson. Burial will follow at Wintergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the service Tuesday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Greenlee, David Shaifer, Doug Hall, Sam Patterson, Keith Moon and Buddy Buzhardt.

AUSTIN BETTIS SMITH

Austin Bettis Smith died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at his home. He was 95.

A native of Siloam Springs, Ark., Mr. Smith was a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Arkansas. He moved to Vicksburg in 1933 and was chief of Dredging and Navigation on the Mississippi River. He was a retired colonel in the U.S. Army and founder of ABS potomological Consultants. In 1999, the Austin B. Smith Line separating Arkansas and Mississippi, was named for him. He was a member of the Mississippi Society of Professional Engineers, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the United States Section Permanent International Association of Navigation Congresses and First Presbyterian Church. He was also a Hall of Fame Award recipient from the Mississippi River Commission.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Patterson and Mary Elise Vangarden Smith; two brothers, Dean Smith and Joseph Smith; a sister, Marybelle Tyler Smith; and his wife, Nancy Mae Sherard Smith.

He is survived by a daughter, Mary Ruth Smith Jones of Vicksburg; one grandson, Jeffrey Sherard Flathau of Hattiesburg; and two great-grandchildren, Hannah Ryan and Tyler Austin Flathau.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church with the Revs. Steve Bryant and David Elliott of St. James Episcopal Church in Jackson officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Glenwood Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the service at the church.

Pallbearers will be Jack Burrell, Randy Sherard, Bobby Bailess, Ed Buelow, Ken Halford, Richard Ledbetter, Bob Cunny, Louis Field, Ernest Thomas, Jack Stamm, Ray Hume, Dick Ferguson, Bill Shappley, Wesley Lominick, Bobby Robinson, Rusty Hawkins, Dr. Don S. Hall Jr. and Harold Blue.
