[01/08/01] Vicksburg dominated every facet of Friday night’s division matchup with Greenville and now finds itself alone atop the Division 4-5A standings.
Patrick Igbokwe came off the bench to score 11 points including a thunderous slam dunk late in the fourth quarter and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Gators (14-6, 3-0) to a 57-42 win over the Hornets (10-8, 1-1).
Jason Walker had 10 points, five rebounds and five steals and Dewayne Jackson had 10 points, seven rebounds and three blocks as the Gators outrebounded Greenville, which was playing without its best post player, 43-19.
“We just ran out of gas,” said first-year Greenville coach Charles McInnis, who was without senior Andrew McNeal, a 6-foot-6 senior who was injured this week in practice. “They were a lot bigger and were able to control the boards.”
The Gators never trailed and were tied just once, 9-9, early in the first quarter. A 9-0 run to start the third quarter gave the Gators a 12-point cushion, which they maintained for the remainder of the game.
“Coach told us we weren’t playing like we should be,” said Igbokwe, who scored seven second-half points. “We were all pumped up and came out and made some shots.”
Late in the third quarter, Greenville clawed back to within six, but then went 6:38 without scoring a basket. By then, Vicksburg had opened a 17-point lead.
“We couldn’t find the basket,” McInnis said. “They were getting two and three shots every time down the floor and we weren’t able to hit anything.”
Quincy Clark led Greenville with 11 points and Derrick Davis scored 10, but was just 3-of-14 shooting.
Walker scored eight first-half points, including a pair of 3-pointers, and Miguel Henyard added a pair of treys.
Vicksburg is the lone undefeated team in the division, but all three division wins have been at home. The Gators still must travel to Greenville and Gentry, as well as Warren Central.
“We are nowhere near where we want to be,” Igbokwe said.

Sisters Kiona and Erica Williams led four Honey Bees (16-3, 2-0) in doubles figures in their division blowout of Vicksburg.
Kiona Williams scored 14 points, Erica Williams netted 13, Shont Hunt had 14 and Tinisha Calvin had 11.
The loss spoiled a 19-point outing by Vicksburg sophomore Shalonda Williams as the Missy Gators fell to 9-11, 0-3.
“They were able to shoot good and we weren’t, and I think only one or two times all game we blocked out,” Vicksburg coach Mike Coleman said.
The Missy Gators were outrebounded 41-19 and scored just 14 first-half points. Vicksburg made just 18-of-52 shots, with Shalonda Williams connecting on seven and Casabrye Royal, who had a career-high 7, on three shots.
After pulling to 9-7 midway through the first quarter, Greenville reeled of 10 straight points to end the first quarter. The Honey Bees extended the lead to 36-14 at the half.
The free-shooting Honey Bees only hit four 3-pointers, but converted second-chance points almost at will, Coleman said.
Vicksburg trailed 54-27 at the end of the third quarter before both teams started massive substitutions.
The Missy Gators will host Clinton on Tuesday.
