SAMUEL CLARK BOOZE

MONTGOMERY, Ala. Samuel Clark Booze died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, as the result of injuries received in an automobile accident. He was 41.

Mr. Booze was born in Vicksburg. He was a welder.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Clark and Gladys Booze; a sister, Carolyn Clark-Jones; and a brother, Eugene King.

He is survived by his wife, Cynthia Booze of Montgomery; four children Demetrius Booze and Samantha Booze, both of Montgomery, Samuel Booze Jr. of Cleveland, Ohio, and Regina Davis of Milwaukee, Wis.; four brothers, Willie Clark and Bobby Clark, both of Vicksburg, Earl Clark and Eric Clark, both of Greenville; six sisters, Laura Clark and Delores Jones, both of Vicksburg, Lorraine Clark and Gloria Stein Parker, both of Detroit, Patricia McCarter of Dallas and Roxie Ann Clark of Saginaw, Mich.; and other relatives including Frances Clark and Raymond Booze, both of Vicksburg, Annie Mae Booze of Cleveland and the Rev. and Mrs. Clarence Johnson of Montgomery.

Services will be at noon Saturday at Original Shiloh P.B. Church in Montgomery under the direction of Belle Funeral Services of Montgomery.

CALTON B. BRUCE

ACKERMAN Services for Calton B. Bruce were at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Nowell Funeral Home in Ackerman with the Rev. Sam Dodd, pastor of South Union Methodist Church, officiating. Burial followed at Old Lebanon Presbyterian Cemetery.

Mr. Bruce died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at ParkView Regional Medical Center. He was 94.

Mr. Bruce lived in Vicksburg for 50 years before moving to Ackerman 23 years ago. He was a retired employee of the Vicksburg city bus lines. He was a member of South Union Methodist Church in Ackerman where he was church treasurer.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Bell Robinson Bruce; and his parents, Lafayette Bruce and Jennie Moss Bruce.

He is survived by a daughter, Becky Seago Simrall of Redwood; a grandson, John Carlton Seago of Charlotte, N.C.; three nieces and two nephews.

Pallbearers were Charles Blaine, Leon Bruce, Mike Bruce, Roy Bruce, T.J. Jemerson, Cordell Langley, Lee Langley, Pete Reese, Prep Taylor and Billy Walton.

JESS EUGENE HESTER

Jess Eugene Hester died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at ParkView Regional Medical Center. He was 80.

Mr. Hester was a lifelong resident of Warren County and served in the Army during World War II. He retired after 35 years as a radio announcer for WQBC in Vicksburg. He worked as a vocalist and drummer, playing Big Band music in clubs throughout the South. He had worked with Al Hirt, Pete Fountain and Elvis Presley. He emceed a number of Miss Mississippi Pageants.

A graduate of Carr Central High School, Mr. Hester was a member of American Legion Post No. 3 and First Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Laura Shingler Hester of Vicksburg; a daughter, Shirley Ann Smith of Jackson; and a son, Harvey Eugene Hester of Vicksburg.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Fisher-Riles Funeral Home with the Rev. James Busby officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon Thursday until the service at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Larry Dillard, David McDonald, Lewis Miller Jr., Robert Murphy, Neil Brooks and Lee Beauman.

Honorary pallbearers will be Pat Cashman, Charles Powell, Charles Riles, Elmo Allen, Lum Husbands, Oren Bailess, Lewis Miller Sr., Paul Barrett, George Culkin, Willie Warnock, Bill Downey, Gordon Lewis and Edger Loflin.

EVELYN FLETCHER NICHOLS

Evelyn Fletcher Nichols died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at Vicksburg Medical Center. She was 77.

Mrs. Nichols was a lifelong resident of Vicksburg. She was a 1942 graduate of Carr Central High School. She was a member of Acadia Chapter of Eastern Star, American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and First Christian Church.

She is survived by her husband, Louis A. Nichols of Vicksburg; a daughter, Cameron Mayer of Indianapolis, Ind.; a son, Louis A. Nichols III of Vicksburg; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Glenwood Funeral Home with the Rev. Hancell Bankester officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 Wednesday night at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Dennis Wood, David Wood, Rodney Nichols, Larry Nichols, Craig Mayer, Dr. William Dribben, R.A. Price and Billy Kearns.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.

KATHLEEN SHIRLEY

Kathleen Shirley died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at Vicksburg Medical Center. She was 89.

A native of Hinds County, Mrs. Shirley retired as dairy manager from A&P Grocery after 30 years of service. She was a member of Ridgeway Baptist Church and had lived in Vicksburg for the past seven months.

She is survived by a daughter, Kay S. Creston of Vicksburg; four grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Glenwood Funeral Home with the Rev. James Hartley officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon Thursday until the service at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Wallace Breazeale, C.J. Humphrey, Charles Humphrey Sr., Eric McGarrh, Ken Opara-Nadi and Dwight Patterson.

Honorary pallbearers will be Don Breazeale, Thomas Breeland, Harold Creston and Jimmy Lowe.

HAZEL SHELBY STEVENS

Hazel Shelby Stevens died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, in San Antonio, Texas. She was 85.

A former resident of Vicksburg, Mrs. Stevens had lived in Texas for 20 years. She was a bookkeeper for a number of years with several merchants in the Redwood area.

She was preceded in death by her husband, E.F. Stevens; her parents, Charles and Annie Shelby; two sisters, Sadie Parker and Lucille Parker; a brother, C.I. Shelby; and a grandson, Douglas English.

She is survived by a daughter, Lynn Stevens English of San Antonio.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Cedar Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Mitchell Hedgepeth officiating.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the service Thursday at Glenwood Funeral Home.
