[01/24/01] After closing briefly to restock, the Sack and Save supermarket on South Frontage Road reopened Wednesday under new ownership.

The store’s name will be retained, but inside it will essentially be a Winn-Dixie.

Jitney Jungle of America, based in Jackson, sold the Vicksburg store to the Winn-Dixie chain, based in Jacksonville, Fla., as part of a Jitney reorganization. Another group of former Jitney stores was sold to the Bruno’s chain.

“Our plan when we purchased that store was to take inventory and then put in some equipment and reopen it,” said Mickey Clerc, a Winn-Dixie spokesman.

Clerc said the company plans to operate the store under its original Sack And Save name but to restock with merchandise from the Winn-Dixie warehouses. That merchandise will include national brands as well as Winn-Dixie’s house brands.

Signs in the front windows said the store would reopen at 10 Wednesday morning.

Randy Lloyd, store manager, said he could not talk to the news media because of company policies, but Lloyd and the staff manning the store are expected to remain.

Clerc said the gasoline outlet, Pump And Save, will continue to operate.

However, his information did not indicate who would operate the pharmacy.

Winn-Dixie is not new to Vicksburg. It previously was in Dixie Plaza shopping center on South Frontage Road.
