ISABELLA DRAKE BATTON

PORT GIBSON Isabella Drake Batton died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at her home. She was 83.

Mrs. Batton was a lifelong resident of Port Gibson and a graduate of Randolph Macon Women’s College in Lynchburg, Va.

Mrs. Batton was member of the board of trustees at Harriet Person Memorial Library in Port Gibson and a member of the board of trustees of the Port Gibson Separate School District.

She was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Batton was preceded in death by her husband, A. Alfred Batton.

She is survived by a daughter, Mary Drake Swoope of West Point; a son, Alex Batton Jr. of Port Gibson; a brother, Joseph T. Drake Jr. of Port Gibson; a sister, Ellie McCarley of Port Gibson; and four grandchildren, Elizabeth Drake Bolton of Jackson, James Powell Swoope of Columbus, Alexander Alford Batton III of Asheville, N.C., and Margaret Allison Batton of Austin, Texas.

Services were at 11 a.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church of Port Gibson with the Rev. Michael Herrin officiating. Burial followed in the Wintergreen Cemetery in Port Gibson.

Pallbearers were Larry Hancock, Thomas B. Nichols, Allen Burrell, Joseph T. Drake III, Frank Wilson, Bobby Fahey, H.M. Drake Jr and W.M. Drake.

JOHN C. CARROLL

John C. “Uncle Johnny” Carroll died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at ParkView Regional Medical Center. He was 83.

Mr. Carroll was a native of Duckport, La., and had lived in Vicksburg for most of his life.

He was a retired commercial fisherman and a member of Northside Baptist Church.

Mr. Carroll was preceded in death by his parents, W.B. and Isabel Whittington Carroll; four sisters, Emma Hinson, Irene Simpson, Isabel Hampton and Sally Beyers; and a grandson, “Ray” Carroll.

Mr. Carroll is survived by his wife, Betty J. Carroll of Vicksburg; two daughters, Bunny Stringer and Jean Muirhead both of Vicksburg; three sons, Jimmy Carroll of Vicksburg, J.W. Carroll of Raymond and Billy Ray Carroll of Winnfield, La.; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Ida Cogan of Vicksburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services were Monday at 11 a.m. at the Fisher-Riles Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Walker, former pastor of Northside Baptist Church, officiating. Burial followed at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Johnny Stringer, Jay Carroll, Jeff McRaney, Don Muirhead, Joey Carroll, Andy Wilkinson, Charlie Carroll and Randy Thorne.

Honorary pallbearers were Jack Hearn, Nathan Skipworth, Johnny Brewer, Willie Skipworth, Randy Hinson and Chuck Blackledge.

Memorials may be made to the St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital at 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105.

ONEVA JOSEPHINE HEAD

Oneva Josephine Head died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at Vicksburg Medical Center. She was 91.

Ms. Head was a native of Mt. Olive and a retired teacher from the Biloxi school system. She was a member of Mt. Olive Methodist Church.

Ms. Head attended Mississippi University For Women and graduated from Belhaven College. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority Zeta Chapter.

Ms. Head was preceded in death by her parents, Sidney A. Head and Rosebud Hadley Head.

Ms. Head is survived by two nieces, Louise Carr of Vicksburg and Rose McAlevy of Jackson; three nephews, Lindsey Head of Madison, Sidney A. Head of Charlotte, N.C., and Bob Head of Kinder, La.; and numerous cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Services were at 3 p.m. Monday at the Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Mt. Olive. Burial followed in the Mt. Olive Cemetery.

DONALD G. MILLS

Donald G. Mills died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at ParkView Regional Medical Center. He was 77.

Mr. Mills was a construction engineer and had lived in Vicksburg for the past five years. He was a native of Ft. William, Ontario, Canada, and a veteran of World War II with the United States Navy.

Mr. Mills was a member of the American Legion Post 3 and Crawford Street United Methodist Church.

Mr. Mills is survived by his wife, Jean Hawker Mills of Vicksburg; two daughters, Susan Tate of Vicksburg and Mary Kennedy of Dallas, Texas; three sons, David Mills of Greenville, Donald Mills of Port Huron, Mich., and Danny Mills of Madison Heights, Mich.; a sister, Elva Mills of Lexington, Mich.; and 10 grandchildren.

Services were at 2 p.m. Monday in the sanctuary at Crawford Street United Methodist Church.
