Mathes, VHS win opener

[02/21/01] Vicksburg High’s Emily Mathes got the big hits and kept Northeast Lauderdale from getting the big hits in the Missy Gators’ 7-4 season-opening road win Tuesday.

Mathes went 3-for-4 with an RBI and pitched six shutout innings for VHS.

The home team scored all four of its runs in the fourth to pull within a run. Only two of them were earned.

“I was proud of how we came together after those two errors,” VHS coach Josh Harper said.

Dayna Nugent went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Dana Daigre went 2-for-4 and Cassidy Dollar doubled for VHS, which had 14 hits. VHS hosts Lawrence County Thursday at 5 p.m.
