[03/21/01] Warren Central didn’t allow a couple of big games this weekend distract them from the important task at hand Tuesday beating division foe Greenville 14-0.

Three Viking pitchers Brian Pettway, Brent Towne and John Morgan Mims combined on a no-hitter, Towne and Joey Lieberman each hit two-run homers and Pettway went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI doubles. Kevin Coker and Taylor Tankersley also had two hits apiece to lead WC (15-1), which faces Northwest Rankin and Clinton on Friday and Saturday.

“It was a district win, and that’s good. We have to win our district ballgames to get ourselves to the promised land, and our guys came out and did a good job. We continued to hit the baseball, and I thought we did a good job offensively,” said WC coach Sam Temple, sporting a cast on his right hand after getting hit with a bat during a drill in practice on Monday.

Pettway started and threw three perfect innings to get the win. He struck out four and allowed only two hard-hit balls, but was on a low pitch count and gave way to Towne in the top of the fourth. John Morgan Mims closed things out.

“It was tough taking (Pettway) out with a no-hitter, but it was kind of the way things worked,” Temple said. “It gave us an opportunity to work Brent, and it was his first outing this year and he did a good job, and we then bring John Morgan in, and those are pitchers that are going to have to pitch for us down the stretch.”

Both Towne and Mims struck out two and allowed a walk, but neither runner advanced past first base.

The Vikings, meanwhile, had runners advancing past all of them, all day long.

Towne’s two-run homer in the bottom of the first staked WC to a 2-0 lead, and the Vikings blew the game open with seven runs in the second.

WC’s first seven hitters of the inning reached safely. An RBI single by Chris Hite and Tankersley’s two-run single helped get the ball rolling, and Pettway’s RBI double to left made it 7-0.

Pettway was thrown out at third trying to stretch it into a triple, but Towne reached on a one-out error to set the stage for Lieberman, who crushed an offering from Greenville’s Carl Walker over the left field fence for a 9-0 lead.

Four Greenville (5-3) errors helped the Vikings tack on five more runs in the third. Coker and Pettway also had RBIs in the inning.
