[03/30/01] For the second straight year, Mississippi State’s LaToya Thomas was one of 10 players selected as a Kodak all-American, which is voted on by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.
The 6-foot-2 sophomore from Greenville led the Southeastern Conference in scoring for the second consecutive season, averaging 24.3 points per game. That total was good for fourth nationally. She was third in the SEC in rebounding with 8.8 per game.
Last year, Thomas became the eighth freshman to earn the honor. She is also the youngest member of this year’s team, which includes eight seniors and one junior.
Thomas earned 14 other awards this season, including four all-America honors. She broke eight MSU records this season.
She was Women’s Power Forward of the Year at the ESPN The Magazine’s inaugural awards show Wednesday.
“We expect that Toya will continue to improve and that there will be many other honors in store for her as she continues to work hard,” MSU coach Sharon Fanning said.
Other members of the team are: Stacey Dales (Oklahoma), Kelly Miller (Georgia), Tamika Catchings (Tennessee), Marie Ferdinand (LSU), Svelta Abrosimova (Connecticut, Georgia Schweitzer (Duke), Katie Douglas (Purdue), Jackie Stiles (Southwest Missouri State) and Ruth Riley (Notre Dame).
