FRANCES MACKEY BETTS

Frances Mackey Betts died Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at ParkView Regional Medical Center. She was 89.

A lifelong resident of Vicksburg, Mrs. Betts was a graduate of St. Francis Xavier Academy. She attended Our Lady of the Lake College in San Antonio. She was a member and held various offices in the St. Francis Xavier Alumnae Association. She was involved in the American Red Cross, the Community Concert Association and many service and educational activities of the Catholic Diocese of Jackson. She was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, where she was a member of the Sodality of the Blessed Virgin Mary for more than 70 years.

Mrs. Betts was employed with Mercy Hospital and The Street Clinic as a medical librarian and later as a transcriptionist and medical secretary. She was also involved in initiating the printing of the first hospital news bulletin, for which she served as a reporter, writer and editor for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry H. Mackey and Mabel Glass Mackey; three brothers, Joseph Brotherton “Bob” Mackey, Col. C.H. Mackey and Henry E. “Pete” Mackey; a sister, Lucille Mackey Howard; a grandson, Victor E. LaGarde IV; and a nephew, Michael David Mackey.

Survivors include a daughter, Glenda Betts LaGarde of Vicksburg; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and other relatives.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be said at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Catholic Church with the Rev. Thomas McGing officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday at Fisher-Riles Funeral Home with Rosary at 7:30.

Pallbearers will be Justin LaGarde, Owen LaGarde, Emile LaGarde, Victor E. LaGarde, Chris Brinkley and Tom Patin.

Honorary pallbearers will be her nephews, Thomas B. Howard, Henry Mackey Howard, James M. Mackey, Jimmy Speyerer, Patrick Heraghty, Herman Biedenharn, Eric Biedenharn, James Biedenharn and David Biedenharn.

REBECCA WILLIAMS BIEDENHARN

Rebecca Williams Biedenharn died Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at her home in Jackson. She was 86.

Mrs. Biedenharn attended Vicksburg public schools and graduated from Carr Central High School. She owned and operated Biebec’s for many years. She and her husband were associated with the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Vicksburg.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Oswald Kenneth Biedenharn; a son, Kenneth Wayne Biedenharn; and a brother, D.T. Williams.

Survivors include three daughters, Carolyn Biedenharn of Seattle, Gayle Biedenharn Walker of Roseburg, Ore., and Judy Biedenharn of Spokane, Wash.; three brothers, George Williams and James Williams, both of Vicksburg, and Herman Williams of New York City; four sisters, Hilda White of Bartonsville, Pa., Nancy Mumper of Jackson and Betty Sue Wilkerson and Frances Williams, both of Vicksburg; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Fisher-Riles Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Biedenharn officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Herman Biedenharn, Eric Biedenharn, David Williams, Richard Wilkerson, Don Biedenharn, Easy Biedenharn and Jim Horan.

LARRY DARNELL HOWARD

JACKSON Larry Darnell “Sputnick” Howard died Sunday, April 1, 2001, in Los Angeles. He was 44.

Mr. Howard was born in Jackson and attended Jackson Public Schools. He received his general education diploma from Jackson State University. He later moved to Los Angeles, where he was employed as an inventory clerk.

He is survived by his mother, Willie Mae Howard of Jackson; his stepfather, Robert Moore of Detroit; three brothers, Ivory J. Howard and Bruce E. Howard, both of Los Angeles, and Ricky C. Russell of Jackson; four sisters, Bernadine Borden of Jackson, Mary Church and Maxine McGraw, both of Los Angeles, and Linda Taylor of Milwaukee, Wis.; his grandmother, Bernice H. Morris of Jackson; his great-grandmother, Thelma Howard of Edwards; and other relatives.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lakeover Funeral Home in Jackson. Burial will follow at Garden Memorial Cemetery in Jackson.

Visitation will be Friday at the funeral home.

DORIS ROWLAND KIRSCHENBAUM

Doris Rowland Kirschenbaum died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at Richardson Medical Center in Rayville, La. She was 85.

Mrs. Kirschenbaum was born in Greenville and had lived in Vicksburg since 1935. She retired after a number of years in the accounting field, having worked for Jack Halpin C.P.A. Firm, Mercy Hospital and Vicksburg Housing Authority.

She was a member of Crawford Street United Methodist Church and the Vicksburg Country Club Ladies Golf Association.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John J. Kirschenbaum; a daughter, Barbara Kay Kirschenbaum; her parents, G.Y. and Viola Rowland; and two brothers, G.Y. Rowland Jr. and S.D. Rowland.

Survivors include three sons, John R. Kirschenbaum of Fairhope, Ala., Richard T. Kirschenbaum of Vicksburg and Neil E. Kirschenbaum of Rayville; a daughter, Nell Kirschenbaum Bishop of Biloxi; three grandchildren; Amanda McDonald, Gretchen Brochard and John L. Kirschenbaum; and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Glenwood Funeral Home with the Rev. Geoffrey Joyner officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Park.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
